Join the Marcus Garvey Cultural Center as they host various programs, events, and highlights throughout the month of February in celebration of 黑人传统月.
In her 1984 speech, Black woman writer Audre Lorde stated, “与out community, there 没有解放.在这种追求中 & to that end, The Garvey is pleased to announce our 2024年黑人遗产月 slate and theme: Hair, Love & 灵魂! What better way to build community than through good vibes and great hair?! 理发师 shops, beauty salons and even beauty supply stores have always served as communal safe spaces where Black people could share and learn openly and candidly about important (& often controversial) topics, joke, laugh, get fresh and be their most authentic & unapologetic selves-- with a haircut & 没有! In the spirit of this tradition, with this 黑人传统月, we want to open our doors to create & 分享社区 ,理发店 & beauty salons have always provided!
We invite you to explore the entire slate of programming, as well as follow our social media to learn more about how we plan to celebrate Black history, heritage and culture 整整一个月! You will find in our slate of programming that some 加维的传统 remain current, including Chicken & Waffles and Garvey Table Talk, but you will also 找一些新的 & creative events on our slate, which we hope to add to our beloved 加维的传统!
To kick off a month of Hair Love & SOUL, we invite you to the Grand Opening of the 大卫•维. 鲍威尔美容用品! This resource is available to all Black, African, & African American diasporic students, where you can check out various hair products & styling tools specifically for your hair type. 所有项目都是免费使用的 & 是可用的 给各个层次的学生! We will also be hosting a barber, providing free cuts, during our open house, so RSVP for your cut!

The Marcus Garvey Cultural Center has created an Oral Histories Project to collect narratives, images and stories of the Garvey, from those who experienced it firsthand over the last 40 years, including alumni, students, staff and faculty.
Share your memories and meaningful experiences. Upload any media or artifacts – from photos and videos to articles or personal reflections – from your time at UNC. 与 your submissions and through audio and video interviews, we aim to curate student and alumni memories and document the impact The Garvey has had on the UNC community while preserving those memories for future generations.
